Fashion in 2008: What’s Coming Up

So seeing as how it’s the New Year and all, people always want to know what’s going to be the “next big thing” in fashion in the coming months. And so I’ll take it upon myself, as a Denver Connects guest blog writer and ShopGoldyn.com co-owner, to help us navigate through the treacherous jungle we call “fashion.”

Looking at the offerings from the likes of Balenciaga, Chloe, Dries Van Noten, and others, one thing is clear – there is certainly no lack of choice. There are the big, busy flower prints that are cropping up everywhere for Spring (Prada does have a nice version, though others seem a bit garish). But who, really, is going to wear that? We’re still seeing a lot of leftovers from the mod 60s trend that has been going on for a while, but these days there’s a little bit more influence from the 70s (think high waisted pants—say goodbye to underwear overexposure ladies!), as well as a classy 40s vibe. There’s also a bit of a minimalist, construction-focused streak going on for those of us sick and tired of the decades game (3.1 Philip Lim has some nice examples, and of course that’s Marni’s main staple).

So where does all this choice leave you when you’re in the dressing room trying to decide what pants are going to make your butt look good? My advice: Go with what works best for your body type (you can check out my handy Fit Guide for help), and go with pieces that are classic enough to last you a while. Screw these fickle trends. They all come back around anyway, right? Unless, of course, it’s those adorable Marc Jacobs shoes ;-) .
