Zine-ophiles!

Publishing is an incresasingly tricky venture.
Being a writer, publisher, layout artist, or pretty much anything involved in main stream print media is a tough gig, what with the print magazines and newspapers of yore quickly shuttering their shops or conducting massive buyouts to minimize staffing, as the pressure from the digitial medium increasingly makes them unprofitable. Of course, trying to get anything resembling a diverse opinion or even vaguely edgy concept into one of these print dinosaurs was a massive challenge. So maybe it’s not so sad to see the mushy world of middle-grade print media take a hike.
So what’s an entrepreneurial spirit with a zest for the printed word, image, and some fresh ideas to do?
Create a ‘zine!
And what better way to get pointers, information, and some community support than at 2008’s Denver Zine Fest?
As the Zine Fest terms it, a ‘zine itself “is [a] ’self-published small press publication, often a photocopied hand-bound booklet.’ The Denver Zine Fest promotes the spirit of ‘do-it-yourself’”
For all of us sick of Rupert Murdoch or the creeping irrelevance of mainstream media, the fest will featuring workshops offering helpful tips on interviewing, printing, comic composition, and other artful and DIY topics.
Take that, media conglomerates!
Viva la zine revolution!
