Observing (un)nature
When I first saw the cat creatures with the squid-like tentacles for a face, it brought back distant dream landscapes that were both spooky and exciting.
In Lauri Lynnxe Murphy’s new show at Plus Gallery (2350 Lawrence St) titled “Unnatural,” Murphy explores shapes and creatures and tricks the viewer with twists and turns, eyes where there should be no eyes, and strange color configurations on animal forms we all assume to be a muted brown.
Working with forms (made of styrofoam or some other filler material) picked up from taxidermy shops, Murphy mixes these recognizable deer heads, cat-like forms, and other animals into bizarre new breeds. Painted in automotive paint, they reminded me of something out of a Jim Henson movie like Labyrinth, or perhaps a fantasy novel. I was especially fond of the little cat-squid, with his athletic-sock looking pink legs.
Murhpy is also showing a variety of other pieces, but it is the unnatural animals that feature front and center and must be seen to be believed.
The show opened this past Friday and runs through July 12th.
