Denver and the DNC

We now stand near the dawning of the historical, hysterical, and hypocritical parade of lights, cameras, and media that the powerful people in this universe call the Democratic National Convention. Historical, as in the nomination of the first black candidate, hysterical, as in the awkwardness of letting Hillary speak hoping the nervous breakdown finally comes just as the lights shine down and the cameras click on, and hypocritical, as in the City of Denver’s plan to hide the homeless like they were all named Waldo sitting on the beach and beat down any protester coming within a stone’s throw of anything anywhere.

We can expect the most sensational convention since all hell broke loose at the ’68 festivities in Chicago. History will be made when Obama gives his acceptance speech at the new Mile High Stadium, and outside the stadium where I-25, the main artery through the heart of downtown Denver, will be closed during rush hour on a weekday. I wonder how many voters will be stuck in that dismal abyss of traffic hell… and how many will hold a grudge?

McCain has somehow stuck his dirty head in the entire filthy mess by having a white powdery substance sent to his Denver campaign offices. Depending on how you read that last sentence, it can be an accusation… or not. I will leave it up to you to decide.

Amongst all the hoopla there will also be protesters. Amongst the protesters there will be folks looking to cause trouble because they are pissed off over some random thing or another and figure on some media attention for being arrested. Amongst all this will be the people of Denver, caught up like fish in a net drug through a school of sharks, alone and hurt in a cold dark world, confused like a deer on an old mountain road staring into the inevitable oncoming headlights, wondering how in the hell they are going to get home after working long hours and finding roads closed everywhere.

Somewhere in this mess is also the slightest tinge of hope for an embattled nation. For the last eight years we have been ruled over by tyrants and fools. John Kerry was a joke. We might just have a candidate here in Barack Obama. His ideas are change… and if we ever needed change it is right now… in the year 2008… while our country is at its lowest point since the Civil War.

So at the center of all this is a man. A man who has fought his way through a long and perilous path to stand before us and make his case for leadership. Standing in front of him is an even longer and more perilous road. He faces Republicans, and we all know the lengths they will go to in order to stay in power. He also faces a road untraveled, being the first non-white presidential nominee to ever grace a ballot card.

Whatever happens will be historic. The world is watching. The Olympics are officially 2nd page news. Somewhere, a Commie propaganda control chief is breathing a heavy, long held sigh of relief.
