First you get the sugar, then you get the power.
If you want to feel like a kid in a well, candy store, get yourself over to Hammond’s Candy Factory on 5735 N. Washington Street for a Free Factory Tour!!
The Hammond Factory was started in 1920, and is still making lots of lollipops, sticky carmel, and chocolate goodies amongst other things.
I went on this tour a few years ago, and it was pretty cool to see how all the sweet, sweet candy is made. I was especially impressed with the ribbon candy (just like the kind you’d find in the bottom of gooey old-fashioned candy dishes, but more fresh) which was a long, soft looking string that workers snipped with scissors.
The candy canes were especially awesome, as they came out in two colorful ribbons that wound around and around each other.
Tours run Monday-Friday and Saturday. Check their website for times and information on taking the tour. You can hang out in the candy store before and after the tour to grab some snacks for gifts or for yourself.
